Sartharion (two drakes)

Sartharion, The Onyx Guardian, is a black dragon boss located in the Obsidian Sanctum of the Chamber of Aspects.

This part of the Obsidian Sanctum contains 4 mobs of interest. These are Sartharion (the raid boss himself) and 3 drakes, Vesperon, Shadron and Tenebron. Each has their own form of adds depending on how you engage. The drake mobs are known as 'Disciple of ...' respectively.

Not much lore I am afraid, if you need a fix, go read up on the The Lich King or something.

Having killed Sartharion with no drakes remaining and seeing how completely easy it was to avoid Flame Tsunamis, we decided to skip starting the fight with a single drake up and moved right to the pair and this makes the fight complicated in several ways.

We did it in such a fashion that we only really worried about one dragon at a time, but the alertness of the raid must increase with the increased debuffs, void zones and having to portal to the twilight zone (no really) in order to kill eggs or disciples. As you can see from the skeletons in the screenshot it was no easy task but ultimately we found we were able to finish the second drake off with enough people to kill Sartharion.

Why? We needed the challenge, that and the more drakes that remain the more loot you get as well as being of a higher quality. A third drake would provide a tasty mount but the fight difficulty would once again be increased, perhaps soon. Ok we admit it, we are achievement junkies and there was nothing funnier than seeing somewhere between 50 to 75 achievements spamming the poor folks who didn't make it in.

Next up - who knows? I guess we start working on achievements and potentially that third drake until Blizzard share with us what they have been working on! We are quickly running out of content to satisfy our four night raiding schedule and we are only going to get it done faster.

Malygos

Malygos is a leviathan with small wings. His body is covered with crystalline scales of pure azure. His body shines with shifting colors that change constantly from blue to silver. Theoretically, since he and his children specialize in magic it is likely that their powers far exceed those of the other dragon flights since magic is the element they rule.

Malygos the Spellweaver is the blue Dragon Aspect, and the master of the blue dragonflight. He is one of the most ancient creatures living on Azeroth, and one of only a handful who were alive at the time the Titans departed. Now that he has regained his sanity, he is once again taking an active role in the protection of the world

I have no idea what the difference between a leviathan and a dragon is, but his wings look pretty normal size to me? Anyway, once again this is a fight that can either be experienced in 25 or 10 man versions as long as you have a key holder from the relevent versions of Naxxramas. Maligned have now, of course, cleared both versions of each instance.

The fight is broken into three phases. The first the tank keeps the dragon occupied while the raid stand behind and do what we can to both bring him down to 50% while at the same time stopping orbs from reaching him (with the added incentive of providing a DPS buff if you stand in the sparks the orb leaves behind) and being spun around in the air. The next phase involves killing schions and nexus lords which circle around the place on crazy circular boards (which can be mounted by players) while running around and ensuring that you are standing inside orbs left behind by dragon breaths (you can't make this shit up). Once all the humans are dead the fun starts - we mount dragons. The idea then is to stack up as many dots while the whole raid dodges various attacks on Malygos as possible before the ten minute enrage timer hits.

Due to the enrage timer this fight can be quite tricky, you really don't want to lose people for no reason. I think at this stage of so many of us knowing the fight quite well as long as we can reach the third phase with 22+ people up we have ourselves a kill and so we did.

It feels strange to have killed an entire magic aspect but stranger things have happened such as Alexstrasza, a huge dragon, rocking up just as we kill the boss - such classic Warcraft timing!

Naxxramas

Naxxramas is an entry-level raid instance floating above the Dragonblight, and is available in both 10-man and 25-man versions. It has the shape of a necropolis and has the questionable honor to serve as the seat of one of the Lich King's most powerful officers, the dreaded lich Kel'Thuzad.

The original incarnation of the instance was regarded as the most difficult pre-Burning Crusade raid, and required 40 well-equipped players to complete. In the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King expansion, Naxxramas was moved to Northrend and retuned to be the introductory level 80 raid dungeon

[ After clearing the instance several times we have completely failed to take a screenshot. One shall be added later! ]

The instance, while briefly entertaining, is nothing more than a simple joke and a chance for those to experience or reminisce about the 40 man as it originally existed. The first week the majority of us entered wearing mostly level 70 epics and left with many upgrades. General boredom led us to clear two wings on the night before our first official raid, needless to say we killed Kel'Thuzzad during our standard raid schedule the following week.

With the limited 25 man content currently available we will of course keep clearing it as there are many good upgrades and current best-in-slot items available there. More than likely by the time the next instances arrive it will no longer be part of our official schedule but then who knows when that will be.

The majority of fights in there are as they were when they were originally released, but from a DPS point of view (with the exception of Thaddius and Heigan) requires little thought and was simply a matter of killing mobs in a particular order or having a vague understanding of a fight easily obtained by experiencing the fight at least once.

The gear upgrades are nice though and it is nice to have such an introduction to the Wrath of the Lich King after working so hard in the Sunwell.

Kil'Jaeden

The Burning Legion, a vast host of demons thousands if not millions strong, it was an unstoppable army of death and destruction. Its Burning Crusade against all of creation had consumed innumerable worlds and would devour countless more, nothing could prevent stop it… well almost nothing.

A single small blue and green world shone like a jewel in the cold darkness of the void, it had been created by the Pantheon the rulers of the most powerful race in the universe the Titans. Because of this it became a target for the Legions creator and commander Sargeras a fallen titan and once the great being had move on from the fledgling world the demons fell upon it like wolfs on sheep.

But then the unthinkable happened, the Legion was defeated not once but three times with each loss more devastating than the last. First they tried using the Highborne but this group was defeated by the dragons and night elf rebels and as a result were cast into the sea. After that the demons used the orcs a race which had been corrupted on a distant world, but they were not only defeated but their world of Draenor was destroyed.

Lastly they had used the unending host of undead they called the Scourge, but once again their war ended in defeat and Archimonde the commander of the legions armies was destroyed leaving it with only one leader left Kil'jaeden, who now sought another way to destroy the world that had stood in the path of the Burning Crusade.

Once again he decided to use the ever magic hungry elves to achieve his goal this time they called themselves the blood elves and he manipulated their leader Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider into opening a gate way via the Sunwell, this time however it was not for an army of lesser demons but the Deceiver himself.

So, the game is finished for Maligned once more - at least for another month. Although the content is now nerfed I think the satisfaction of the kill was still there. Learning the fight - which gets far more difficult as it goes through its five phases - on our second night of focused attempts really shows the quality of Maligned's raiders. It is soon time to board the zeppelin and head to Northrend. See you on the other side!

M'uru and Entropius

The room was deathly silent; no one had made a sound apart from breathing for the last twenty minutes. They had been at this now for hours and the strain was beginning to show on some but every one knew that there was still a long way to go before they could go home. Finally their leader rose from where he was sitting and spoke, with an expression of grim determination etched on his face as he walked over and looked out the window of the boardroom.

“People this has gone on long enough, in case some of you have forgotten the planning the penultimate fight for the Sun Well Plateau, our most challenging raid dungeon to date,” he declared and spun to look at his development team. “Now what have you got?” The room once more fell into silence as they all looked at each other, then one developer slammed his had on the desk and leapt to his feet.

“I’ve got it,” he declared excitedly, all eyes turn to him. “We’ll make it a two phase fight, in the first one Mu’ru spawns lots of adds and in the second turns in to a giant void walker,” there were cheers and claps from every one in the room but the boss who shook his head.

“You suggested that for High Astromancer Solarian in ‘The Eye’,” he pointed out as he moved back to his seat and once again the room was filled with an oppressive stillness, but only for a second as another developer stood up with a grin on his face.

“What if in the first phase when one of the adds die, it spawns more adds,” he suggested. All eyes turned from him back to their department head who sat for a moment letting the idea sink into his head then he smiled.

“Works for me,” he decided. “Now lets go for a beer,” the developers cheered once and rushed from the room.

We were already making good progress into phase 2 on this fight before the big Wrath patch hit - of course anyone could say that, but killing him/her/it the first night possible (Felmyst bugged the previous night due to server errors) helps us back that statement up. There is still plenty going on in this fight so a little co-ordination is still very much required. The last patch only made it a little more forgiving as we made a few errors but still found the time to nuke Entropus down. We then stood around afterwards and couldn't help but feel a little cheated of a kill that would have been far more satisfying a week earlier.

Eredar Twins

Twins, everybody loves them. Two beings that are identical to each other and whose minds are like one, well that’s the theory anyway. It just so happened to hold true for the Eredar Twins - Lady Sacrolash and her sister The Grand Warlock Alythess, together they were a formidable force and truly Kil’Jaeden The Deceiver had chosen well in placing them as the guardians to the entrance to his inner sanctum where they could watch over the weak and treacherous Fel-Elves.

They had heard the death cry of Sathrovarr the Corruptor and a short time later the ground shook as Brutallus the largest Pit Lord the legion had ever know fell. They felt as his demonic essence corrupted the body of one the noble blue dragons and twist it into a villainous servant of their lord, however neither of them were surprised when it too fell before the force that now assaulted the Plateau.

Yelling orders they sent the Fel-Elves into action knowing full well that they could not stop such a force but with their pathetic disposable lives they would buy the summoning ceremony time. True to their expectations, their minions lasted less than a hour, now these determined and powerful enemies stood on the platform above them looking at each other both Sacrolash and Alythess swore they would go no further this is where the line would be drawn and held.

Little did either of them know that the leaders and veterans of this force they now faced had dealt with twins before…

Having spent just under two weeks slapping these two fine ladies around, we realised they weren't really as commited to the relationship as we thought and we were forced to move on.

The general tactic for the fight is to have a spasm with your mouse hand when you hear your name called over Teamspeak and move away from everyone else, conveniently located on top of each other. Eventually if this is repeated enough you get to jump down into the centre, a treat often ruined by others taking the plunge shortly before the pull - resulting in much hiliarity and sometimes name calling.

Onwards to Muru and one step closer to Kil'Jaeden.
